You'll need to read the start of the story to understand parts of the ending, but if you'd like to skip straight to the part where they start discussing fallacies, you could start reading at the paragraph beginning with "I had my first date with Polly the following evening" slightly less than halfway down the page.

Extending the ideas of love and fallacies, what would our assumptions about love and gender roles be in Singapore?
For example, is a man who holds his wife/girlfriend's handbag displaying his love or violating a gender role?
One could argue that he is expressing his love by doing something simple for her (i.e. holding her bag).
However, one could also interpret it as an act of subjugation (the female is too weak to even carry her own bag), or rebellion (who cares if other people think I'm a henpecked sissy?)
